EXPERIENCE

Here at the Cumbrian-Goat-Experience we have the many different types of Rare and Native Breeds of Goats available in Britain, therefore, for a more specific question on your particular breed contact us at info@cumbrian-goat-experience.co.uk  where we will be happy to point you in the right direction, or alternatively, go to the BGS website at www.allgoats.com

At Woodhow our Goat Farm’s majority herd form part of the ‘Goat Triangle’, the Angora’s for wool; the Golden Guernsey’s for the dairy; and the Boer’s for the meat.

In this section, we intend to aid you, the goat keeper, in the basic care and keeping of goats, and the different breeds available in the UK.

A goat is one of the most useful animals you can keep, not only are they easy to look after and feed, they produce lovely tasting milk to make cheese, butter and yogurt from, and of course, to drink! They are an excellent source of meat, the skins tan well and the fat is used to make soap.  Some breeds even produce a fine hair,  Mohair and Cashmere, and as well as all that you have a marvellous source of manure for the garden. But above all that the goat is a lovable animal to have around!

On these pages we will look at some basic husbandry principles of goat keeping, breeding, housing, feeding and hoof trimming. Most the comments will apply specifically to dairy goats and meat goats, but fleece goats have the same needs and requirements.

Taking care of goats is a major responsibility - it is a 365-day a year job.
